Aaron, you would never react this way if it happened to you. Did you use a travel agent to make things go smoothly and now you are second-guessing yourself for not taking care of things yourself? It all sounds dramatic--just getting on the train, just like in the movies!--and typical of third-world travel. I don't really know, but it's one of the reasons I don't travel--I couldn't cope.
